Lizzie Calligas
Sea Pastels

Lizzie Calligas transforms the seascape, through an aesthetic process, into a landscape. She uses her video camera to capture swimmers at the beach zooming her lens to its limit. In this way she obtains a fuzzy image transforming something very far into something close, something tangible, that is however lost in resolution. It appears that the artist intentionally selected to not focus on the object that she wants to shoot, losing the necessary clarity. She then imports the video into a computer and views the footage scene- by-scene and stops the video where the image takes on the characteristics of a disintegration of forms, completely non-descriptive and totally abstract. The photographs that result in this way barely resemble the initial medium, the video.
